The muffuletta sandwich has a rich history rooted in Italian immigrant communities, particularly in New Orleans, Louisiana and is known for its unique and flavorful combination of ingredients.

Many people think the word, muffuletta, is just one sandwich. But in reality, the term “muffuletta” refers to the round Sicilian sesame bread used to make the sandwich. This delicious bread is similar to a large, round loaf with a sturdy texture. Many Sicilians immigrated to the United States in the late 19^th and early 20^th century.  When they did, they brought their love of the muffuletta bread with them.

The “New Orleans-style” version of the muffuletta sandwich is traced back to the early 20^th century. There were many Sicilian workers frequenting Salvatore Lupo’s store in New Orleans. Because of their love of the muffuletta bread, he created a sandwich for them.

This style of muffuletta traditionally consists of layers of Italian cold cuts, such as salami, ham, capicola, and mortadella, along with provolone cheese. This muffuletta sandwich is set apart by the olive salad spread, which includes a mixture of green and black olives, pickled vegetables, garlic, and various herbs and spices. The olive salad provides a tangy and briny flavor that complements the richness of the meats and cheese.
