Origins of Halloween
Do you know that the origins of Halloween date back 2,000 years ago in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France? At that time, the Celts, who inhabited that land, celebrated their new year on November 1st. The eve of their new year was a way to mark the end of summer and the harvest, and the beginning of the cold, dark winter.
It was also believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
When the Romans conquered that land, and after Christianity was firmly planted, All Saints Day was set for November 1st, also known as All-hallows. All-hallows Eve, or Halloween, as it was eventually called, really began to take on the look and feel of what we know as Halloween in the 19th century, as more immigrants, especially millions of Irish, brought their traditions to America. Ghost stories and mischief-making were common.
