Cannoli: A Sicilian Culinary Tradition

Origins of Cannoli

Cannoli – a traditional Italian dessert that has its origins in Sicily is still homemade at Rosie’s Sidekick Sandwich Shop.

It is widely believed that cannoli were created in the Palermo region of Sicily during the Arab rule in the 9th century, some 1,200 years ago! The word “cannolo” itself is derived from the Arabic word “qanawāt,” which means “tube” or “cane.”

The early version of cannoli was a simple pastry shell made by rolling dough around a piece of cane, and then frying it. The filling was made from ricotta cheese, which is a staple in Sicilian cuisine.

Coming to America

As Sicilians immigrated to other countries in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they brought their culinary traditions with them, including the beloved cannoli. It is no surprise that cannoli became more popular and widespread among Italian immigrant communities around the world.

The classic cannoli consist of a crispy, fried pastry shell (cannolo), which are filled with a sweetened ricotta cheese mixture. The filling can include ingredients like chocolate chips, candied fruits, citrus zest, and nuts, depending on personal preferences.

When Joe and Rosie Pecoraro immigrated to the United States, they brought their traditional cannoli recipe with them. They used that recipe to make cannoli in their northwest side bakery for over 50 years. Freddy Pecoraro has continued that tradition at Rosie’s Sidekick Sandwich Shop.

You can still get a traditional, homemade cannoli any day at Rosie’s Sidekick Sandwich Shop in Logan Square and Schaumburg. Whether they are just for you or you want them catered for a party, Rosie’s Sidekick Sandwich Shop is your stop for delicious, homemade cannoli.
